How Reveal works
The six terms you'll see across the app, and how they fit together.
Reveal has a small vocabulary. Learn these six words and the rest of the product reads easily.
Guide
A guide is one recorded walkthrough. It belongs to your workspace, it has a title and description, it's made of one or more steps, and it has a status: draft, published, or archived.
You create a guide in Reveal for Chrome by recording it. You manage it in the dashboard.
Step
A step is one moment inside a guide. It points at one element in your product and shows a tooltip there, with a short video clip of you explaining it.
Each step is its own clip. That matters more than it sounds: it means you can re-record step four without touching steps one through three.
Camera bubble
The camera bubble is the circular video of your face that sits next to the tooltip. It's the part users remember. The same sentence spoken by a person lands differently than the same sentence typed into a box.
Checklist
A checklist is several guides put in order, so they read as one journey. "Your first day in Acme" might be five short guides that together get someone set up.
Users see a checklist as a floating widget on your site, ticking off items as they go.
Pixel
The pixel is a single script tag you install once, at the root of your domain. It works out which guide or checklist applies to the person on the page, draws the tooltips, and sends analytics back.
One pixel covers your whole workspace. You never install a second one.
Playback
Playback is how a guide reaches a user. There are two ways.
Live tooltips overlay your real product. The pixel draws the tooltip and the camera bubble on top of your actual UI, and the user clicks through their own product.
Interactive embed plays the guide inside an iframe, as a chapter-based player. It works on any page, including pages you don't own, and doesn't need the pixel on that page.
Same recording, same camera bubble, same analytics. Just two places it can play.
How they connect
A workspace holds many guides. Guides can be grouped into checklists. Every guide has behavior rules that decide when it fires and who sees it, and every guide reports into the same analytics.
That's the whole model. Most of the dashboard is one of those six things.
