Glossary

Every term Reveal uses, defined once, in alphabetical order.

Reveal has a small vocabulary, and the same words show up in the dashboard, the extension, and these docs. This page defines each one in a sentence or two, with a link to the page that covers it properly.

If you are reading the docs in order, How Reveal works covers the six terms that matter most.

Terms

Archived. A guide status for walkthroughs you have taken out of circulation without deleting them. Archived guides sit under the Archived tab on the Guides page and are not published, so they do not load on your site. More

Camera bubble. The circular video of the recorder's face that sits beside each tooltip. It appears large and centred during the personal intro, then shrinks to a corner circle for the walkthrough.

Checklist. Several guides put in order so they read as one journey, such as a first day setup. Users see a checklist as a floating widget on your site and tick off each guide as they complete it.

Completion rate. The share of users who started a guide and reached the end of it. It appears as COMPLETION on the guide and COMPLETION RATE on the dashboard.

Domains. The list of sites where a guide is allowed to run, set on the Domains card of the guide's Embed tab. The pixel only serves the guide on these domains, and wildcards like *.acme.com or * are supported.

Drop-off. The share of users who reached one step of a guide and never reached the next one. It is the number that tells you which step to re-record.

Dynamic link. Any URL on your domain with ?reveal={guideId} added, which starts that guide when a visitor lands on the page. It never expires, has unlimited uses, and needs no custom JavaScript.

Guide. One recorded walkthrough of your product, made of one or more steps, with a status of draft, published, or archived. You create a guide by recording it in Reveal for Chrome and manage it in the dashboard.

Impression. One instance of a guide being served to a page, whether or not the user starts it. Impressions are always higher than starts, which is why the two are counted separately.

Interactive player. A chapter-based player that runs a guide inside an iframe on any page, including pages you do not own. It plays the same recording with the same camera bubble and reports the same analytics as live tooltips.

Personal intro. The opening segment of a recording where you introduce yourself with the camera bubble large and centred, before the walkthrough starts. It is a toggle in the recorder settings, and you end it with Finish Intro. More

Pixel. The single script tag you install once in your site's <head>, which covers your whole workspace. It works out which guide applies to the visitor and the page, draws the tooltip layer, and posts analytics back to Reveal.

Published. The status a guide needs before it can appear to your users. A guide with no steps cannot be published, and drafts do not load on a live site or collect any analytics.

Reveal button. A styled, drop-in button you paste into your page that starts one specific guide when a user clicks it. Its label and style are chosen in the app and baked into the snippet you copy.

Start. A user actually beginning a guide, as opposed to being shown one. It is the guide.started event, and it appears as STARTS on the guide and GUIDE STARTS on the dashboard.

Step. One moment inside a guide, targeting one element in your UI and showing a tooltip there with a short clip of you explaining it. Each step is its own clip, so you can re-record step four without touching the rest.

Step funnel. The chart showing "% of users reaching each step" of a guide, with its own date range that defaults to Last 30 days. It is where drop-off becomes visible.

Workspace. The container for your guides, checklists, team members, and settings, identified by a slug. One pixel covers one workspace, and that slug is the data-workspace value in the pixel snippet.
