Checklists

Create a checklist

Record the guides first, then bundle them into an ordered journey from the Checklists page.

A checklist is assembled from guides you've already recorded, so most of the work happens before you open the Checklists page. Once the guides exist, building the journey is a matter of choosing which ones belong in it and what order they go in.

Record the guides first

The Checklists page gives this as its own tip: "Record guides first, then bundle them into a checklist."

There's no way around it. A checklist has nothing to bundle until the guides are recorded, and a journey built on half-finished drafts shows your users a list of things that don't play.

Before you start:

1. Record each guide separately

One task per guide, five to eight steps each. Recording a guide covers the flow.

2. Check each one on its own

Open each guide, run the Issues tab, and confirm the steps are there on Overview. A guide that's broken alone is broken inside a checklist.

3. Publish them

Draft guides don't load on your live site. Publish each one before you group them, or the journey has gaps.

4. Decide the order

Write the sequence down before you build it. The order is the thing a checklist actually contributes, so it's worth five minutes of thought rather than whatever order they were recorded in.

Start the checklist

Open Checklists from the sidebar and click New checklist. The page header shows the total count and the line "Group guides into ordered journeys. New users complete them step-by-step to master your product."

If the workspace has no guides yet, go and record some first. There's nothing to assemble.

Ordering the guides

A checklist holds several guides in a sequence you choose, and that sequence is what your users work through. The floating widget on your product lists them in that order and ticks each one off as it's completed.

Order for the user's first session, not for your product's architecture. The first item should be the one that gets them to something useful fastest, and anything they can safely discover later belongs near the bottom or in a separate guide entirely.

Each guide keeps its own identity inside the checklist. Its steps, its analytics, and its behavior rules are unchanged, and editing the guide updates it wherever it appears.

Coming soon. Step-by-step documentation for the checklist creation screen, including its fields and options, is on the way. The behaviour described above is what the app states about checklists today. For the exact fields on the creation screen and the checklist detail page, follow what the app shows you.
